ADHD and Stimming in Women: What You Need to Know

Stimming is a word people often use for repetitive movement, sound, touch, or other sensory activity that helps the nervous system stay engaged, regulate, or release energy.

For an ADHD woman, this might look like bouncing a leg, tapping a foot, twirling hair, picking at a nail, pacing, doodling, chewing gum, touching a textured object, humming, repeating a phrase, or constantly doing something with her hands.

Some of these behaviors may be better described in ADHD research as fidgeting, restlessness, sensory seeking, or repetitive movement rather than stimming. The research on “ADHD stimming” as its own phenomenon is still limited.

What we do know is that movement and sensory differences are common in ADHD, and for some people they appear to help with attention, alertness, or regulation.

Do People With ADHD Stim?

Yes. Many ADHD people describe behaviors they call stimming.

ADHD itself includes hyperactivity and restlessness for some people, and these can continue into adulthood even when they look different from childhood hyperactivity.

Adult hyperactivity may look less like running around and more like:

  • bouncing a leg
  • shifting position often
  • tapping or clicking
  • pacing while thinking or talking
  • doodling during meetings
  • playing with a pen, ring, or object
  • needing to stand or move while working
  • feeling internally restless even when you are sitting still

Movement can also increase when a task is boring, repetitive, mentally demanding, or requires sustained attention.

A 2024 study of adults with ADHD found that greater fidgeting occurred during correct responses on an attention task and was associated with more consistent reaction times later in the task. The authors suggested that fidgeting may sometimes help support alertness and sustained attention, although more research is needed.[1]

Stimming, Fidgeting, and Restlessness Are Not Exactly the Same Thing

These words overlap, but they are not interchangeable.

Fidgeting usually refers to small movements that may happen while someone is sitting, listening, thinking, or trying to stay engaged.

Restlessness is the feeling of needing to move or difficulty remaining still.

Stimming is broader everyday language often used in neurodivergent communities for repetitive sensory or movement-based behaviors that may feel regulating, stimulating, comforting, or organizing.

A behavior can fit more than one category.

For example, repeatedly bouncing your leg in a meeting might be described as fidgeting, restlessness, or stimming depending on what it feels like and what it is doing for you.

The label matters less than understanding the function.

Why Might an ADHD Brain Seek Movement or Sensory Input?

ADHD is not only about attention.

Research increasingly suggests that many people with ADHD also process sensory information differently.

A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis of 30 studies involving more than 5,000 participants found that people with ADHD showed more sensory sensitivity, sensory avoidance, low sensory registration, and sensory seeking than comparison groups. The studies varied considerably, so this does not mean every ADHD person has the same sensory profile.[2]

An earlier adult ADHD study also found both sensory hyper- and hyposensitivity, with sensory differences especially notable among women in that sample.[3]

This helps explain why some ADHD women may seek extra input while others become overwhelmed by it—and why the same person may do both depending on the situation.

You may seek:

  • movement
  • pressure
  • texture
  • sound
  • chewing or oral input
  • visual stimulation
  • repetitive motion
  • background noise
  • something to do with your hands

At other times, the same nervous system may need less noise, less touch, less visual clutter, or less social input.

What Stimming Can Look Like in ADHD Women

Some ADHD women are visibly restless. Others learned very early to hide it.

Stimming or fidgeting may look like:

  • rubbing fingers together
  • twisting rings or jewelry
  • playing with hair
  • touching clothing seams or textures
  • biting the inside of the cheek
  • chewing gum or pens
  • skin picking or nail picking
  • tapping a foot under the table
  • bouncing a leg
  • rocking slightly
  • doodling
  • pacing while talking on the phone
  • listening to the same song repeatedly
  • repeating words, sounds, or phrases
  • using a fidget object
  • changing sitting positions frequently
  • standing while working

Not every repetitive behavior is stimming, and the same behavior can have different causes.

Hair twirling may be soothing for one person, a habit for another, and anxiety-related for someone else. Skin picking can sometimes become a body-focused repetitive behavior that causes injury and deserves its own assessment.

Can Stimming Help With Attention?

Sometimes.

Many ADHD people report that a small amount of movement or background stimulation helps them stay present.

This can feel confusing if you were taught that paying attention means sitting still.

But looking still and being attentive are not the same thing.

Some people listen better while walking. Some need to doodle. Some remember more if their hands are occupied. Some focus better with low-level background sound.

The 2024 adult ADHD fidgeting study supports the possibility that movement may sometimes function as a compensatory strategy for sustaining attention.[1]

That does not mean more movement always improves attention. The effect depends on the person, the task, and the type of stimulation.

The useful question is:

Does this help me stay engaged, or is it pulling me farther away from what I want to do?

Stimming May Also Help With Regulation

Movement or sensory input may help you:

  • stay awake during a boring task
  • discharge restless energy
  • concentrate while listening
  • settle after sensory overload
  • transition between activities
  • reduce tension
  • feel more grounded in your body
  • tolerate waiting
  • manage strong emotion
  • make an uncomfortable environment more manageable

You do not need to assume every stim has one meaning.

Sometimes you are seeking stimulation. Sometimes you are trying to settle. Sometimes you are simply moving because your body wants to move.

ADHD Stimming and Autistic Stimming

Stimming is more established in autism research and diagnostic language than it is in ADHD research.

Autistic people may stim for many reasons, including sensory regulation, expression, enjoyment, communication, or managing overwhelm.

ADHD people may also use repetitive movement or sensory input, but the research base is less developed and often uses terms such as fidgeting, hyperactivity, restlessness, or sensory seeking instead.

A person can also be both autistic and ADHD.

You do not need to decide that a behavior “belongs” to one diagnosis before you can understand whether it helps you.

Why ADHD Women May Learn to Hide Movement

Girls are often corrected for being too loud, too active, too much, too distracting, too talkative, or not ladylike enough.

An ADHD girl may learn to:

  • keep her legs still
  • stop tapping
  • hide a fidget under the table
  • control how much she talks
  • suppress excitement
  • sit on her hands
  • force eye contact
  • appear calm even when she feels restless

By adulthood, she may not think of herself as hyperactive at all.

She may simply know that sitting through a meeting feels exhausting.

Suppressing movement can become part of ADHD masking.

If you are using part of your attention to monitor whether you are moving too much, you have less attention available for the conversation, meeting, class, or task itself.

When You Do Not Need to Stop a Stim

A harmless stim does not automatically need treatment.

If tapping your foot, doodling, rocking, pacing, chewing gum, or using a fidget helps you function and is not hurting you or someone else, the fact that it looks different is not enough reason to eliminate it.

Sometimes the better question is not How do I stop doing this?

It is Is there actually a problem here?

If the main problem is that other people think the behavior looks unusual, that is different from the behavior causing harm.

When a Stim May Need More Attention

It is worth looking more closely when a repetitive behavior:

  • causes pain, bleeding, skin damage, hair loss, or other injury
  • interferes with sleep
  • prevents you from doing something you want or need to do
  • feels impossible to interrupt even when you want to stop
  • suddenly appears or changes significantly
  • may be related to medication side effects, anxiety, a tic disorder, or another health issue
  • creates a safety risk

If you repeatedly pick skin, pull hair, bite yourself, or engage in another behavior that causes injury, the answer is not necessarily to remove all movement or stimulation. It may be more useful to understand what the behavior is doing and find safer ways to meet the same need while also considering whether another condition is involved.

Make the Stim Safer Instead of Automatically Suppressing It

If a behavior helps but causes a problem, try changing the form rather than removing the function.

Examples:

  • skin picking → textured ring, putty, picking stone, or another hand-based activity
  • chewing pens → gum or an appropriate chewable item
  • pacing that disrupts others → scheduled movement breaks or a place where you can walk
  • loud tapping → quieter tactile input
  • painful nail biting → another form of oral or hand stimulation
  • sitting discomfort → standing desk, footrest, rocking chair, or permission to change position

The best substitute is usually one that provides similar sensory input.

A random fidget toy will not necessarily help if it does not match what your nervous system is seeking.

Notice What Your Body Is Asking For

You can learn more by paying attention to the pattern.

Ask:

  • When do I start doing this?
  • Am I bored, overloaded, anxious, tired, excited, or concentrating?
  • Do I need more stimulation or less?
  • What sensation does this behavior provide?
  • Does it help me listen or think?
  • Does it help me settle?
  • What happens if I force myself to stop?
  • Is the behavior hurting me, or am I mainly worried about how it looks?
  • Is there a safer or easier way to get the same input?

You may discover that what looked like a “bad habit” was information about attention, sensory needs, stress, or capacity.

Sensory Support Is Part of ADHD Support

If you repeatedly need movement, sound, pressure, or another kind of input, that does not mean you lack self-control.

It may mean your environment is asking your brain to stay regulated under conditions that do not fit very well.

Support might include:

  • permission to move
  • a standing or flexible workspace
  • headphones or earplugs
  • quieter surroundings
  • music or background sound
  • fidget objects
  • textured items
  • gum
  • movement before or during demanding tasks
  • shorter periods of sitting
  • fewer unnecessary sensory demands
  • recovery time after overstimulating environments

Research on adult ADHD and sensory processing is still developing, but the evidence is strong enough that sensory needs should not be dismissed as irrelevant to ADHD.[2]

The Bottom Line

Stimming in ADHD is not yet a precisely defined research category.

But ADHD is clearly associated with movement, restlessness, fidgeting, sensory seeking, and other sensory-processing differences.

For some ADHD women, these behaviors may support attention or regulation. For others, a particular behavior may be uncomfortable, harmful, or worth understanding more closely.

You do not need to judge the behavior by how normal it looks.

Ask what it is doing for you.

Then decide whether you need to leave it alone, support it, make it safer, or investigate it further.
