Adjust Your Expectations to Your Current Capacity

Use this to: revise one ongoing expectation when your circumstances have changed.

Try it

  1. Name the change. What is different about your health, responsibilities, energy, or available support?
  2. Identify an outdated expectation. What are you still expecting yourself to manage as though nothing changed?
  3. Set a workable standard. Specify what can be simplified, reduced, postponed, or shared.
  4. Choose when to reassess. Your plan can change as your circumstances change.

Example

While caring for a family member, you are still expecting yourself to cook a different meal every night. For the next two weeks, you choose familiar meals and ask another household member to handle dinner twice a week.

Your next step: Write: “For now, enough looks like …. I will review this on ….”
