Ask the Right Person for the Support You Need

Use this to: turn a broad need for support into one specific request.

Try it

  1. Choose the type of help. Listening, practical help, perspective, or company?
  2. Choose someone with room for that role. The person directly involved in a difficult change may not be able to support every part of it.
  3. Ask clearly and allow an answer. Explain what would help and ask whether they have capacity.

Example

During a relationship change, you need someone to listen without helping you make a decision. You ask a friend: “Do you have twenty minutes this week? I could use a listening ear. I’m not looking for advice right now.”

Your next step: Write the name of one person and the exact request you want to make.
