Respond When Someone Pushes You to Be Further Along

Use this to: communicate a limit when someone pressures you to recover, reconnect, or resume responsibilities.

Try it

  1. Name what they are asking. Is it a specific responsibility or a demand to feel differently?
  2. Separate requirements from pressure. Work, finances, or caregiving may require a plan; another person’s preferred emotional timeline is a different issue.
  3. State your capacity and next step. Say what you can do, what you cannot take on, and what help or discussion is needed.

Example

A relative asks you to host again before you have capacity. You say: “I’m not able to host this month. If the gathering goes ahead, someone else will need to organize it.” You do not have to promise a recovery date to make that limit clear.

Your next step: Prepare one sentence: “I can …. I’m not ready or able to …. What would help is ….”
