When One Difficult Moment Becomes the Whole Story

Use this to: check a broad conclusion such as “I ruined everything” against the full situation.

Try it

  1. Describe the difficult moment. Keep the event separate from a judgment about yourself.
  2. Name the conclusion. What are you treating this moment as proof of?
  3. Add the missing information. Include what went adequately, what remains uncertain, and any real problem that needs attention.

Example

You forget a point during a presentation and conclude that it went badly. The audience also asked engaged questions, and you explained the main idea clearly. A fuller account is: “I missed one point. People understood the main message. I can send the missing detail afterward.”

Your next step: Write a two-sentence account of the whole event, then decide whether anything needs follow-up.
