Words for When You Care but Have Limits

Use this to: find a sentence for a limit you already know you need.

Try it

  1. Choose the situation. Do you need less time, a later conversation, or a different role?
  2. Choose a sentence below. Change it so it sounds like you.
  3. Name what you will do. If you need to end a call or stop carrying messages, follow through when you can do so safely.

Example

  • Less time: “I can talk for fifteen minutes, then I need to go.”
  • Later: “I don’t have room for this conversation tonight. Can we talk tomorrow?”
  • No fixing: “I can help you think it through, but the decision is yours.”
  • No mediating: “Please tell them directly. I’m not going to pass messages.”
  • Repeated discussion: “I care about what’s happening. I need a break from talking about it today.”

Your next step: Save one sentence where you can find it before the conversation.
