A Guided Meditation for the Flourish Group
Length: Approximately 6–8 minutes, including pauses
Before we begin, find a position that feels comfortable for you.
You might be sitting in a chair, curled up on the couch, standing, or even moving a little. You can adjust your position whenever you need to.
For today's practice, we're going to keep our eyes open and explore something that surrounds us every day but that we don't always pay much attention to.
Color.
We move through a world filled with color. It's in our homes, our clothing, the things we use, and the natural world outside our windows.
And because it's always there, we can go through an entire day without really noticing it.
Today, we're going to spend a few minutes paying attention.
[Pause for 5 seconds]
Start by looking around wherever you are.
There's nothing particular you need to find.
Just allow your eyes to move through the space.
Perhaps you'll notice the sunlight coming through a window, a familiar piece of furniture, something on a shelf, or an object you've walked past hundreds of times.
Give yourself a moment to look.
[Pause for 10 seconds]
Now, see if there's a color that catches your attention.
Maybe it's bright and easy to notice.
Maybe it's a softer color that almost blends into the background.
It doesn't have to be your favorite color or even one you particularly like.
Just choose something that interests you.
[Pause for 10 seconds]
Spend a little time looking at that color.
Is it the same everywhere you see it?
Or are there subtle differences?
Perhaps there are places where the light makes it brighter, or shadows make it deeper.
Maybe it's a color that's difficult to name.
Sometimes we call something blue or green or brown, but when we look a little longer, we discover that there's much more going on.
[Pause for 15 seconds]
I wonder if this color reminds you of anything.
Maybe it brings to mind a place you've been, something from childhood, a favorite piece of clothing, or a particular season.
Perhaps it reminds you of a person.
Or maybe it doesn't remind you of anything at all.
You can simply enjoy looking at it.
[Pause for 15 seconds]
Now, let your eyes wander again.
This time, notice how the colors around you relate to one another.
Some seem to belong together.
Others stand out because they're so different from what's around them.
You might discover a combination you've never really paid attention to before.
The warm color of a wooden table against a cooler wall.
A small patch of green outside a window.
The way sunlight changes the appearance of something familiar.
[Pause for 15 seconds]
See if you can find one small detail that surprises you.
It doesn't have to be anything remarkable.
Maybe you're noticing how many shades of one color exist in a single object.
Maybe you're seeing a reflection or a pattern you hadn't noticed before.
Or perhaps you're simply realizing how much there is to see in a space you know so well.
[Pause for 15 seconds]
Take a moment to notice what this experience is like for you.
You might feel interested, peaceful, curious, or reminded of something pleasant.
You might feel a little restless.
You might not notice any particular feeling.
Whatever your experience, there's room for it here.
[Pause for 10 seconds]
There's a feeling we sometimes call awe.
We often associate it with extraordinary experiences, like standing at the edge of the ocean, looking up at a sky filled with stars, or seeing something so beautiful that we stop for a moment.
But I think we can sometimes find small moments of wonder in very ordinary places.
In the way light falls across a room.
In the colors of a leaf.
In something we've seen a thousand times but are suddenly noticing in a different way.
[Pause for 10 seconds]
Before we finish, I'd like you to look around one more time.
See if there's something in your surroundings that you'd like to appreciate for just a few seconds.
It might be a color, an object, a pattern, or simply the way the space looks right now.
Give yourself a little time with it.
[Pause for 20 seconds]
Now, begin to bring your attention back to the room and the people around you.
Notice where your body makes contact with the chair, couch, or floor.
You might want to stretch, shift your position, or take a comfortable breath.
And as we return to our day, perhaps you'll notice a color or a small detail that you might otherwise have overlooked.
A little moment of curiosity.
A little moment of wonder.
Thank you for sharing this time with me.
Optional Group Reflection
After the meditation, you might invite participants to share:
"Did you notice anything that surprised you, brought back a memory, or made you see something familiar differently?"
Participants can also share what it was like to focus on color, even if they didn't experience awe or relaxation.
