This guide aims to provide you with a practical tool to cultivate self-compassion, which is crucial for managing anxiety, self-criticism, and feelings of inadequacy often experienced by women with ADHD.

Why Soothing Touch Works

Touch is a powerful way to cultivate self-compassion. It involves physically touching different parts of your body with a gentle and caring intention. This simple act can have profound effects on your psychological and physical well-being. Here are some reasons why soothing touch is helpful:

  1. Reduces Stress Hormones: Touch helps settle stress hormones, reducing vulnerability to infections and providing a sense of safety and comfort.
  2. Promotes Positive Psychological State: Imagined soothing touch from another person can be useful in managing pain, coping with social challenges, and promoting a psychological state of feeling calm, cared for, and trusting.
  3. Enhances Heart Rate Variability: Practicing soothing touch in front of a mirror while repeating phrases of self-compassion and encouragement can increase soothing positive affect and heart rate variability, indicators of well-being and stress resilience.

How to Practice Soothing Touch

1. Touch Exploration Exercise:

  • Step 1: Find a quiet space where you can sit or stand comfortably.
  • Step 2: With a gentle and caring intention, place your hands on different parts of your body (e.g., chest, belly, forearm, upper arms, shoulders, cheeks).
  • Step 3: For each location, experiment with the type of touch (e.g., firm or gentle pressure, rubbing, circling) and rate the sense of soothing or calming on a scale from 0 (no soothing) to 100 (immense soothing).
  • Step 4: Note down your findings. You might find that certain types of touch or locations are particularly soothing for you.

2. Incorporate Imagined Touch:

  • Step 1: Close your eyes and imagine a person who makes you feel safe and cared for (e.g., partner, close friend, parent, spiritual figure).
  • Step 2: Imagine this person touching you in a soothing manner in the location and manner that you found most soothing in the touch exploration exercise.
  • Step 3: Notice how this imagined touch affects your sense of soothing or calming. Does it enhance the feeling?

3. Add Caring Words:

  • Step 1: Think of words, phrases, or sentences that are particularly soothing or encouraging for you (e.g., "It's okay," "I am safe," "I am loved").
  • Step 2: While practicing soothing touch or imagined touch, silently repeat these words to yourself.
  • Step 3: Notice how adding these words affects your sense of soothing or calming. Does it enhance the feeling?

4. Use a Mirror:

  • Step 1: Stand or sit in front of a mirror.
  • Step 2: Practice the soothing touch exercise while looking at yourself in the mirror.
  • Step 3: As you touch yourself, repeat the phrases of self-compassion and encouragement that you identified in the previous exercise.
  • Step 4: Notice how practicing in front of the mirror affects your sense of soothing or calming. Does it enhance the feeling?

5. Practice Deliberate Breathing:

  • Step 1: Find a comfortable sitting or standing position.
  • Step 2: Imagine that with each breath in, you are breathing in care, love, light, energy, and well-being.
  • Step 3: Imagine that with each breath out, you are spreading this healing energy and care throughout your body, nervous system, and mind.
  • Step 4: Practice this breathing exercise while incorporating soothing touch, imagined touch, and caring words.
  • Step 5: Notice how the deliberate breathing affects your sense of soothing or calming. Does it enhance the feeling?
