The broken record technique is useful when someone keeps trying to negotiate after you have already answered.
The idea is simple: choose one short sentence and repeat it calmly rather than giving more reasons.
Example
Coworker: “Can you take this extra project? It won’t take long.”
You: “I can’t take on another project right now.”
Coworker: “It’s really not that much work.”
You: “I can’t take on another project right now.”
Coworker: “Are you sure? I really need help.”
You: “Yes. I can’t take on another project right now.”
Why repeating yourself can help
Giving more explanations often creates more material for the other person to argue with.
A short repeated answer can reduce the pressure to defend your decision.
Build your own broken-record phrase
Choose one sentence:
- “That doesn’t work for me.”
- “I’m not available.”
- “I can’t take that on.”
- “My answer is no.”
- “I’ve made my decision.”

Practice
Think of one person or situation where you tend to give in after being pressured.
What do they usually say?
What will you repeat?
You do not have to become colder or harsher. You are practicing staying with your answer.
